DevOps Rebuild Improves Infrastructure and Cuts Costs

Helping a cybersecurity firm stabilize systems, secure users, and cut costs.

Quick Overview

Custom DevOps for a Unique Linux Environment

  • Partner: Cybersecurity Services Firm
  • Industry: Cybersecurity
  • The Situation: The firm relied on open source tools with no outside support, and users were connected directly to the data center.
  • The Challenge: Legacy automation and unstable systems caused frequent outages, impacting operations and revenue.
  • The Solution: ITonDemand completely rebuilt their DevOps stack, secured remote access, and added proactive alerting.
  • The Result: The firm now runs more efficiently, with over $20,000 saved annually, fewer servers to manage, and consistent support.

The Situation

Unstable Infrastructure With Added Risk

This cybersecurity firm offers social engineering services and certification testing. Their systems are built entirely on custom, open-source software, with no outside vendor support. When a key developer left, they needed a cost-effective way to keep things running and avoid disruptions.

One major concern was how staff accessed internal systems. Employees were connecting straight into the data center, which created serious security and stability risks. On top of that, they relied on old tools and fragile automation. These problems made it hard to stay productive and keep up with client needs, leading to loss of revenue.

The Challenge

A Fragile Setup That Needed Rebuilding

When ITonDemand began working with the client, much of their infrastructure was held together by outdated scripts and temporary fixes. Automated tasks often caused problems instead of preventing them, and key systems like their phone platform went down regularly.

Another concern was how the systems were set up. Users were connecting directly to the data center, which was a security risk and made operations harder to manage. These problems affected both internal workflows and critical tools used by clients. As the work began, many of the older fixes started to fail, making the gaps even more visible. It was clear the organization needed a complete DevOps rebuild.

The Solution

A Rebuilt DevOps Framework

ITonDemand began by reviewing the client’s systems and focusing on the most urgent problems: system stability and secure access. The team fixed custom code written in C and PHP, rebuilt broken automation, and improved the setup using open-source tools.

To replace unsafe access, we deployed OpenVPN CloudConnexa, giving users a secure and simple way to log in. We also added NinjaRMM for real-time alerts and CheckMK for early monitoring to catch issues before they caused disruption.

We improved communication by setting up a Microsoft Teams channel and creating a clear ticketing process. In addition, we shared documentation and trained their internal contact, helping both technical and non-technical staff stay aligned and respond quickly to requests.

The Result

Streamlined Operations With Less Costs

The client now operates with a secure, efficient, and scalable DevOps environment. Direct access into the data center has been eliminated, replaced with a safer, centralized remote access model. System performance has improved significantly, with automation now resolving issues before they affect users.

Infrastructure has also been streamlined, reducing data center servers from 24 to 8. Combined with broader DevOps improvements, the organization is saving over $20,000 annually. Support tickets consistently receive a high satisfaction score, and internal teams have expressed more confidence in the reliability of their systems. What began as a reactive, high-risk environment is now a secure foundation ready for future growth.
