Executing a Complex Microsoft 365 Tenant-To-Tenant Migration

Completing a tenant-to-tenant migration across Microsoft 365 environments.

Quick Overview

Supporting a Complex Microsoft 365 Tenant Migration

  • Partner: Public Sector Organization
  • Industry: Public Sector
  • Service: Cloud Services
  • The Situation: The organization operated in a government cloud environment and needed access to additional Microsoft 365 features.
  • The Challenge: Government and commercial cloud environments use separate tenants, requiring a tenant-to-tenant migration.
  • The Solution: ITonDemand planned and executed a tenant-to-tenant migration, rebuilding Teams and SharePoint in a new tenant.
  • The Result: Microsoft 365 services and data were successfully migrated and are fully operational in the new cloud environment.

The Situation

Moving Beyond Government Cloud Limitations

The organization relied heavily on Microsoft 365 for daily collaboration, with Microsoft Teams acting as a central place for communication and file sharing. Over time, limits within its government cloud environment made it harder to use certain Microsoft 365 features and integrations.

To work around those limits, the organization approved a move to a commercial cloud environment. This change required more than adjusting licenses, since the two environments run as separate tenants within Microsoft’s infrastructure.

The Challenge

Migrating Microsoft Teams Across Separate Tenants

Unlike typical Microsoft 365 changes, moving between government and commercial cloud environments requires a tenant-to-tenant migration. That adds complexity, especially for organizations that rely heavily on Microsoft Teams.

Teams data spans several systems, including private chats, standard and private channels, Planner data, and SharePoint sites that store channel files. Each content type behaves differently during migration, and no single tool treats all data types the same way. Maintaining data accuracy and usability required careful planning and hands-on technical work.

The Solution

Rebuilding Collaboration Services With Precision

ITonDemand approached the migration with a strong focus on structure and validation. The team created a new Microsoft 365 tenant within a commercial cloud environment and methodically completed a full tenant-to-tenant migration. That included Teams data, along with SharePoint sites, files, and supporting services.

Where automated migration tools required supplemental work, engineers manually rebuilt key components to preserve access and functionality. This included restoring private channels, reconnecting SharePoint content, and confirming that Planner and Teams integrations worked as expected. Additional validation helped ensure collaboration workflows remained usable after the transition.

The Result

A Completed Microsoft 365 Tenant-to-Tenant Migration

The migration was completed with all scoped Microsoft 365 services successfully moved into the commercial cloud tenant environment. Core collaboration tools, including Teams workspaces, SharePoint sites, and files, were available in the new tenant and aligned with the approved scope. Post-migration checks confirmed that access, permissions, and collaboration workflows were functioning as intended.
